One reason I love the Washington, DC area is that you see amazing things while you’re out and about in your car or just walking around. Sometimes something is just so special and I slow down from my schedule to just enjoy it.

In early September 2012, I took some out-of-town guests down to the Mall. I snapped the photo above on my new Android smartphone.

We also visited the National Building Museum/old Pension Building. Above the front door, I noticed they were cleaning some of the exterior frieze on the side of the building. Below is one that depicts Navy seamen in the Civil War:

Here’s the ceiling of the courtyard the National Portrait Gallery. This space is often used for big events. Some Washingtonians will recognize this ceiling from a Presidential Inaugural Ball.

Even if you missed the Cherry Blossoms in the spring, the Tidal Basin is lovely dressed autumn leaves.

Finally, here’s a fall sunset on the Potomac River.
